Behold the last issue of Tech Bisnow for 2012. Before we can leap into 2013, we look back at the tech stories that defined the last 12 months.
Speaking of funding, startups did pretty well when it came to raising institutional money this year. Tom Davidson’s EverFi got some West Coast love, raising a $10M series B round from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, and Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt, as well as firms like NEA and Rethink Education. Other DC startups to raise money this year: Speek, IntroHive, Veenome, Always Prepped, Zoomdata, Foodem, YaSabe.com, HomeSnap, FullCircle, SocialToaster, and Social Tables.
LivingSocial, one of the stars of the DC startup scene, shocked the community recently when it laid off 400 of its employees, the majority in sales, editorial, and customer service. It wasn’t that long ago that co-founder Tim O’Shaughnessy, here with Steve Case, told a NVTC crowd that the company was adding 150 employees a month—it went from 450 to 4,500 in about two years. It’ll be a company to watch in 2013. (Our 2013 resolution is to learn to spell Tim's last name without looking on LivingSocial's website.)
