Gryphn, the D.C.-based secure mobile messaging platform, announced Wednesday that it has acquired Uppidy, another District startup providing SMS backup solutions. Also, Gryphn has changed its featured branding to the name ArmorText, though it will still use the former name in some instances.
Combining their efforts, ArmorText and Uppidy will aim their mobile solutions toward regulated markets like finance, health care and the federal government, according to TechCrunch. Given their proximity to such industries in D.C., that makes great sense.
This mostly comes as Gryphn has transitioned to be more of an enterprise tool and looks to rebrand itself as such through ArmorText. Instead of playing its hand as a Snapchat-like tool with self-destructing messages for consumers – what the company initially launched as – it will pitch SMS encryption efforts to industries that severely need mobile security. Mobile security is a hot topic for agencies around D.C., and ArmorText could see a large market capitalization in targeting it.
No longer will you find Gryphn on the App Store or Google Play. It's not there. But soon it will be re-released under the new ArmorText brand with a focus on enterprise solutions. The new model will have end-to-end encryption and comply with Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and FINRA regulations.
And now with the acquisition of Uppidy, ArmorText/Gryphn will have the ability to back up message sent from device to device. Therefore, businesses in highly regulated industries will have documented evidence anytime communication happens.
