MAVA Announces CEOs Blake Hall and James Quigley to Speak at TechBUZZ Hosted at AOL Fishbowl
Washington DC, June 16, 2014- MAVA today announced two Keynote Speakers, CEOs Blake Hall of ID.me and James Quigley of Canvas, to join the program during TechBUZZ-Summer 2014. As successful entrepreneurs and TechBUZZ alum, both speakers will highlight a program that includes a select group of 20 startups who will present in front of an audience of technology companies and investors during MAVA’s flagship event showcasing some of the most promising technology companies in the mid-Atlantic. The event will be hosted at AOL in Dulles, VA on Wednesday, June 18.
Blake Hall, CEO and Founder of ID.me kicks off the program. Hall founded ID.me, a digital identity network that allows individuals to prove their identity and group affiliations while controlling how their information is shared online. He is a graduate of both Vanderbilt University and Harvard Business University. As a US Army Ranger, Hall led a battalion reconnaissance platoon in Iraq for fifteen months between 2006-2007, leading to his receiving the Bronze Star with Valor for leading men into a firefight with insurgents, which senior commanders credit as having saved 20 lives. Blake has also written for several notable publications, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, Forbes, The Huffington Post and DC Magazine.
The program close will be offered by James Quigley, CEO and Co-founder of Canvas, a cloud-based services company which helps businesses replace wasteful paper forms with apps on their smartphones and tablets. Prior to Canvas, Quigley has had a role in a number of successful start-ups and wireless companies, including inCode, Aether Systems, Orbcomm, and Peak Technologies. Quigley has been named one of 2012’s “Top 50 CEOs” by the Center for Innovative Technology, as well as one of the top 20 global executives in his field by CLO Magazine and the World Supply Chain Forum.
“As any successful entrepreneur will tell you, the value of participating in TechBUZZ is far greater than one, single 4-minute pitch. It’s being part of a community that fosters growth for those companies who are moving along that challenging, and hopefully rewarding, path associated with building a new, innovative and viable business,” said Julia Spicer, Executive Director, MAVA. “As TechBUZZ CEO alumni, Blake and Jason are hitting important milestones real time, which is always appreciated for companies to hear first-hand.”
The presenting 20 companies were selected for TechBUZZ because of their innovative technology or approach to a commerce or enterprise problem. Collectively they provide a representative showing of industry start-ups and businesses being launched regionally. They join the more than 100 start-ups who have presented on the TechBUZZ stage, since the launch of the program in 2011.
TechBUZZ was first piloted in 2010 and launched in May 2011 as a half-day conference preceding Capital Connection in response to the growing impact start-ups and seed-stage companies are having in recent years on the investment ecosystem overall. MAVA is dedicated to continuing to foster and celebrate this vital area of our membership by bringing together investors and entrepreneurs in a dynamic and meaningful format. TechBUZZ shines a well-deserved light on the visionary innovators and company-builders in our region who are actively developing their concepts, testing their beta or prototype products and services and pursuing a path toward market entry.
