18 Area Start-Ups to Take the Stage at TechBUZZ Georgetown

MCLEAN, VA, August 28, 2013—As part of an ongoing program to celebrate and accelerate East Coast innovators and company-builders, MAVA in partnership with the Georgetown Entrepreneurship Initiative, will highlight a select group of 18 startups at its TechBUZZ Georgetown at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business on September 13. Each company will take the public stage to share their story in front of an audience of investors, technology executives and fellow entrepreneurs. These seed and early stage presenters will represent a sample of some of the most highly innovative endeavors being built today.

Presenting companies were selected from nearly 200 diverse start-ups from across the region by a MAVA advisory group of business advisors and active technology investors. The start-ups chosen for formal presentation slots will each take the stage for four minutes to describe their respective company, philosophy and products. Each company will have worked with an industry advisor who will help them shape their presentation for the audience of investors and like-minded entrepreneurs.

“TechBUZZ offers an incredible platform for connecting up-and-coming companies from across the Mid-Atlantic with the many contributors who share in a start-up’s success, including seed and angel investors, corporate business partners and fellow entrepreneurs, all while highlighting these companies on stage during a 4-minute pitch,” said Julia Spicer, Executive Director of MAVA. “For companies both on the stage and in our audience, TechBUZZ helps to accelerate the growth of early-stage companies as they take their product or service to the commercial market.”

TechBUZZ Georgetown will feature a wide range of technology sectors, reflecting the growth of start-ups in the greater Mid-Atlantic region, which has become ground zero for many of the newest ideas, game-changing innovations, and cutting-edge applications of technology in recent years. This year, companies from nascent to seed stage will present ideas from a number of hot technology sectors to their peers and potential partners.  Of the 18 companies to be on stage, 15 are from Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland; two from New York City and Blacksburg, VA respectively; and four founders are alumni of host partner Georgetown University, reflecting the strength of the university’s entrepreneurship program.

Since its launch in 2011, 51% of TechBUZZ presenters from that year have received $55.2 million in funding combined, while 34.2% of all TechBUZZ presenters have reported receiving some form of funding. Since 2011, TechBUZZ presenting companies have received in total more than $70 million in disclosed funding, with many more investments and acquisitions remaining in undisclosed terms. Recently, 2013 TechBUZZ presenters Riskive (winner of “Best of the Buzz” June), and ReelGenie received investments totaling more than $3 million combined, while RedOwl Analytics entered into a strategic partnership and undisclosed investment with In-Q-Tel.

“The experience was invaluable,” shared TechBUZZ Spring 2013 presenter Franklin Din, CMIO, Zigron Healthcare. "Our objective was to alert potential investors and customers in the area that we have a unique solution to an ongoing problem of healthcare fraud. TechBUZZ provided us with a very focused public platform to reach a lot of our target audience. We consider our participation a great success that allowed us to 'burst onto the scene' and we anticipate primary, secondary and tertiary level benefits from our participation,” he said.

The TechBUZZ Georgetown agenda includes a two investor & CEO panels who will  share insights with all companies in attendance. This feedback provides the start-ups on stage and the entrepreneurs in the audience with valuable insight into the diverse approaches and priorities of multiple investors and a realistic perspective on how to shape products and concepts as well as build their companies.

Piloted in 2010 in Baltimore, TechBUZZ was launched in May 2011 by MAVA as a half-day seed-stage conference preceding its annual Capital Connection, which features companies from growth and later-stage companies. To elevate and showcase presenting start-ups and others in the greater Mid-Atlantic region, MAVA taps a range of community partners to bring together a broad, diverse and ever-changing community of entrepreneurs to events such as TechBUZZ and to MAVA’s signature Capital Connection which occurred earlier this year on June 5-6 in Washington, DC.  MAVA’s community partners for TechBUZZ Georgetown cover a wide regional geography from Hatch in Norfolk, VA and Fishbowl Labs in Loudoun County, VA to Washington, DC’s 1776, and ETC in Baltimore, MD.

A non-profit organization with deep roots in the technology community, MAVA brings together company-builders from across the country and at every stage of development, and provides a trusted public showcase to promote these enterprises, from promising start-ups to publicly-traded success stories. TechBUZZ in particular offers a public platform for community partners and their companies and helps shape a supportive ecosystem for the earliest of regional start-ups.
