The New Way To Recruit - Bisnow Profile of Barrel of Jobs

The DC region has the second highest tech job growth in the US after NY this year, according to a recent DICE report. But new recruiting tools are making it easier for other states to gain on us.


Virginia better look out because Maryland is adding tech jobs like crazy. The state topped the DICE list of the fastest-growing states for job growth, increasing tech employment 6% this year. It has defense contractors, too, but the state is also seeing demand from local hospitals, biotech, and healthcare services. Other states in the mix: Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon, and Utah.


Maryland, and other states, have a new recruiting tool. It’s been less than a month since Barrel of Jobs soft launched, and chief strategy officer Julie Kantor reports that the site already has 1,000 jobs listed in over 10 states, with users like Comcast, National Geographic, Burger King, and WeddingWire. When a job gets posted, users share it through social media and email. Once a person gets hired, the people who passed around that particular posting get compensated. Julie says it works because jobs are filled more quickly and cheaply with high-quality candidates.
