Marking its 26th year as a staple conference for the mid-Atlantic technology sector, Capital Connection'13 has proven to be another roaring success. Starting with the game-changing innovations introduced by our Main Stage companies, elevated by the high-energy kickoff of TechBUZZ and the Best of the BUZZ Competition, and highlighted by the celebration of two successful Sterling Companies, we are pleased to have delivered an exciting and thought-provoking program to our vibrant community of entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, and advisors who are successfully building high performing technology companies – many with deep roots in our region.
Incorporating TechBUZZ into Capital Connection's one and one-half day programming, hosting the event at the new and exciting Mead Center for American Theater in the heart of downtown D.C., and featuring another fantastic grouping of 15 Main Stage and 18 TechBUZZ companies, this year's conference was filled with powerful speakers, compelling company presentations and dynamic networking that captivated the audience throughout the high-energy, nonstop action of the conference program.
"Capital Connection provides the environment for a tech community to come together, network and exchange ideas for further innovation. This atmosphere is one of a kind," said Anne Sigman, COO of SocialToaster.
Day 1 (June 5th) began with a number of CXO roundtable discussions and networking luncheons ideal for peer-to-peer interactions on specific topics of interest, which were then followed by an exposition of the Main Stage presenting companies. At 2pm, the official conference programming commenced, kick-started with a recap of milestones reached by Capital Connection'12 Main Stage presenting companies and followed by a presentation from Game Changer Chip Paucek of 2U, a groundbreaking education technology company that is inverting the model for learning, offering both schools and students the learning technology they need.
Over the next day and a half, Capital Connection'13 attendees heard numerous presentations from TechBUZZ and Main Stage Companies as well as three other "Game Changers", titled as such by MAVA for their innovations, accomplishments and contributions to technology and entrepreneurship: Cory Richards of National Geographic, Steven McHale of Explorys and Gary Parsons of NextNav, LLC. Day 1 closed with the Sterling Dinner Reception recognizing the successes of two "Sterling" Companies, comScore and K12, while the conference's Closing Reception on Day 2 recognized the startup Riskive as the 2013 "Best of the Buzz" winner, with CourseMaven and Mobile System 7 as runner-ups.
“As co-founder of a startup, Capital Connection was a tremendous opportunity to learn from fellow entrepreneurs, established companies and potential investors. While listening to established business leaders, I was able to learn about their mistakes and celebrate their achievements. For newer companies, such as those participating in TechBUZZ, I was able to see what areas were 'hot' and also picked up tips on how to make a compelling pitch. All in all, Capital Connection provided a great return on my investment," said James Sun, CTO of Deconstruction.
