Alec Ross

Distinguished Senior Fellow at Johns Hopkins University
New York Times Bestselling Author

Alec Ross is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Johns Hopkins University and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Industries of the Future, published by Simon & Schuster. The Industries of the Future explores the technological and economic trends and developments that will shape the next ten years, from cybersecurity and big data to the commercialization of genomics to the code-ification of money, markets and trust. Since its publication in February of 2016, it has gone into an 8th printing and the rights have been sold for translation into 18 languages.

He recently served for four year as Senior Advisor for Innovation to the Secretary of State. In this role, Alec acted as the diplomatic lead on a range of national security issues.

Previously, Alec served as the Convener for the Technology, Media & Telecommunications Policy Committee on Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and served on the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team.

In 2000, he and three colleagues co-founded a technology-focused social enterprise and grew it from modest origins in a basement into a global organization serving millions of low-income people, with programs on four continents.

Alec started his career as a sixth grade teacher through Teach for America in Baltimore where he lives with his wife and their three young children.

Brian Carney

General Partner, Harbert Growth Partners

Brian Carney is a Partner in the General Partner. Mr. Carney joined HMC in 2007 and currently serves on the boards of Anutra Medical, Clinipace Worldwide, Envera Health, Healthcare Interactive, Social Safeguard, and WiserTogether. Mr. Carney is a board member of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development in Durham, NC and is a former Board member of the Richmond Venture Forum. Prior to joining HMC, Mr. Carney was an associate with Morgan Stanley Venture Partners where he executed healthcare growth equity investments. Prior to Morgan Stanley Venture Partners, Mr. Carney was a financial analyst in Morgan Stanley’s Healthcare Investment Banking Group.

Mr. Carney holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with honors from Washington & Lee University.


David Steinberg

CEO, Nextility

David Steinberg is the CEO of DC based Nextility – the world’s first competitive energy marketplace for commercial users. He has over 35 years of sales, technical and executive experience in the energy, data communication, network security, and Internet services industries. He has been in the high tech sectors of Silicon Valley and Washington with several start ups either as founder or member of the early management team. Steinberg was CEO of SwapDrive/Backup.com, an online storage cloud solution from May 2001 to October 2008 (sold to Symantec –SYMC). Steinberg also previously served as the founding director of worldwide channels at then start up Check Point Software, Inc. and as a founding member and Senior Vice President of SynOptics Communications, Inc. (which became Bay Networks after merger). He serves as a director on the board of Costar Group (CSGP), solar energy finance company Sol Systems, The Wireless Registry, and Radius Networks for which he serves as Chairman. He is a member of board of the Mid Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA), the advisory board of the Washington, DC venture capital firm Core Capital Partners, and he serves as board trustee for not-for-profits; SEED School of Washington, DC and We Are Family, DC.
